Summary (human-readable)

  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • We use the data you give us (e.g., prompts, age/profession if you choose to provide them, and feedback) to generate responses, operate and improve this tool, measure impact, and defend against abuse.
  • To generate responses, we send your prompts and necessary context to third-party LLM providers. They process it to produce outputs and may log it per their policies.
  • We also use infrastructure and analytics providers (hosting/CDN, logging, security, form handling, and payment processing for donations).
  • You can request deletion of conversation data we control, opt out of non-essential analytics (where applicable), and contact us with privacy questions.

Data minimization: Please avoid sharing sensitive personal data in free-text prompts. If you see something wrong, tell us via the feedback form.

What we collect

Information you provide

  • Prompts & conversations: The questions you ask and messages you send through the tool.
  • Profile inputs: Age and profession (if you choose to provide them) to tailor explanations.
  • Feedback: Messages you submit via the feedback form (including name/email if provided).
  • Donations: If you donate, payment details are handled by our payment processor; we receive donor records necessary for receipts, accounting, and compliance.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage & device data: Basic event logs (page views, timestamps), IP address (for rate-limiting/abuse prevention and approximate location), user-agent, and referrer.
  • Cookies/local storage: For things like remembering that you completed a survey, basic session UX, and security. We aim to keep these minimal.

Derived information

  • Aggregates & metrics: Counts, anonymized analytics, and A/B test results used to evaluate and improve the tool.

How we use data

  • Generate answers: Send your prompts (and optional age/profession context) to LLM providers to produce responses.
  • Operate & improve the service: Debugging, quality assurance, model prompt improvements, content safety, ranking, and user experience research.
  • Safety & abuse prevention: Detect and mitigate spam, misuse, or security incidents.
  • Impact measurement: Evaluate whether explanations reduce confusion or improve understanding.
  • Legal & compliance: Fulfill legal obligations, enforce terms, and handle disputes.

When we share data

LLM providers (to generate responses)

When you ask a question, your prompt and necessary context are sent to third-party large language model (LLM) providers that process it and return an answer. These providers act as processors for us when providing this functionality. They may retain logs for limited periods subject to their policies. We strive to minimize what we send and to avoid sending unnecessary personal data.

Service providers (to run this site)

  • Hosting/CDN & logging to deliver the site and maintain reliability/performance.
  • Security & rate-limiting to prevent abuse and protect the service.
  • Form handling & email to collect feedback and respond to you.
  • Payment processing (for donations) to handle transactions and receipts; we don’t store full payment card details.
  • Analytics (where enabled) for anonymized/aggregated insights and experiments.

Organizational sharing

We are two nonprofits—AI Governance and Safety Institute (AIGSI) and AISGF—collaborating on this tool. Data may be accessed by our teams on a need-to-know basis for the purposes stated in this policy.

Legal, safety, and compliance

We may disclose information when required by law or in good-faith belief that such action is necessary to (a) comply with legal obligations, (b) protect the rights, safety, or property of users or the public, or (c) detect, prevent, or address security or technical issues.

We do not sell your personal data. We also do not share it for targeted advertising.

Retention

We keep conversation data and related logs only as long as needed for the uses described above (service operation, security, quality improvement, and measurement) and to comply with legal/accounting obligations. Where feasible, we aggregate or anonymize data. Donation records are retained as required by law.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures (access controls, encryption in transit, least-privilege practices) to protect the data we handle. No system is perfectly secure; please avoid submitting sensitive personal data in free-text fields.

Your rights & choices

  • Access, correction, deletion: You can request a copy of data we control about you, ask us to correct it, or request deletion where applicable.
  • Opt-out of non-essential analytics: Where analytics are used, we aim to provide a way to opt out or run only privacy-preserving, aggregated analytics.
  • Communications: If you provide an email via feedback/donations, you can ask us to stop contacting you (except required receipts/legal notices).
  • Do Not Track: We don’t use your interaction with the website for targeted advertising and strive to minimize tracking; some browsers send DNT signals which we respect in spirit even though there’s no standard enforcement.

To exercise rights, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your request.

Cookies & local storage

We use minimal cookies/local storage to remember UI choices (e.g., survey completion), maintain session UX, and protect against abuse. If analytics are enabled, they are configured to avoid collecting unnecessary personal data. You can control cookies in your browser settings; disabling some may affect functionality.

Children

This tool is intended for users aged 13+. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us so we can delete it.

International data transfers & legal bases

We operate internationally and may process data in countries other than your own, including via our providers. For users in the UK/EU, our legal bases typically include: legitimate interests (to operate, secure, and improve the service), consent (where required, e.g., optional analytics), and legal obligation (e.g., donation records). We use appropriate safeguards for international transfers where required.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect improvements or legal requirements. We will post the updated version here and revise the “Last updated” date.
